Medicaid & CHIP Enrollment Data

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) collects Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollment data from states through multiple reporting vehicles.

Medicaid & CHIP Enrollment Data

All states (including the District of Columbia) are required to provide data to CMS on a range of indicators related to key application, eligibility, and enrollment processes within state Medicaid and CHIP. CMS publicly releases these eligibility and enrollment data collected from states in monthly reports. Get more information about the data and view the monthly application, eligibility, and enrollment reports.

Medicaid Enrollment Data Collected through MBES

For the quarter beginning with January 1, 2014, states began reporting Medicaid enrollment data as part of the Medicaid expenditure reporting through the Medicaid Budget and Expenditure System (MBES). The enrollment information is a state-reported count of unduplicated individuals enrolled in the state’s Medicaid program at any time during each month in the quarterly reporting period. The enrollment data identifies the total number of Medicaid enrollees and, for states that have expanded Medicaid, provides specific counts for the number of individuals enrolled in the new adult eligibility group, also referred to as the “VIII Group”. View quarterly Medicaid enrollment reports

Children Enrolled in Medicaid & CHIP

States report child enrollment through the Statistical Enrollment Data System (SEDS) using forms CMS-21E, CMS-64.21E, and CMS-64.EC. The data reported by states represents a point-in-time unduplicated number of children ever enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP as of the date of reporting. View annual child enrollment reports.
